Airlines explore air-rail business collaboration, paper says

Several domestic airlines, including Air China Ltd. (601111.CN), China Eastern Airlines Co. Ltd. (00670.HK), Hainan Airlines Co. Ltd. (600221.CN) and Xiamen Airlines, have announced plans to tap into the air-rail business model to bolster demand, the China Economic News reported Sunday. The model allows carriers to treat railway businesses not as competitors but as partners in providing transport services to the public. Low-cost carrier Spring Airlines, for example, has expanded its partnership with the Shanghai Railway Bureau to increase the coverage of its high-speed railway plus budget air travel service to 15 cities from just five cities in August 2013, increasing the number of flight-connecting high-speed railway services from 30 to 102 times a day, the report said.
