A total of 347,000 online advertisements, or a third of those checked last year in a review by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, were illegal, Xinhua reported Monday, without specifying what rules the promotions breached. The administration examined ads on 20 major domestic websites, including Sohu, NetEase and Tencent, between March and December last. Jiang Yanming, director of the supervision bureau of the administration’s advertisement department, was quoted as saying that online ads have become the fourth-biggest advertising category in the country, after television, radio and newspapers, and the administration will create an online ad monitoring platform to cover the sector better. Official data showed 4,034 cases involving illegal online ads were dealt with in 2013, compared with 3,725 cases in 2012 and 2,499 cases in 2011, the report said.
