Beijing shuts lavish clubs in parks, Xinhua says

Authorities in Beijing have ordered high-end clubs in public parks to close or lower their prices as part of the crackdown on official extravagance, Xinhua news agency reported Thursday, citing a statement by the Communist Party’s municipal commission for discipline inspection. Business at Yushantang and Shanglinyuan, two clubs in Beihai Park known for their opulent decorations and expensive meals, has been suspended, while two other clubs in Zizhuyuan and Longtan parks have been ordered to make their services more affordable to ordinary people, the statement said. All the 24 private clubs and high-end recreational venues in the city’s public parks have been told to move out when their leases end, the report said.
