Sino-Thai rail-for-rice deal at risk, paper says

Allegations of corruption threaten to derail a plan for Thailand to trade its rice exports to China for high-speed-rail technology, China Business News reported Friday, citing unidentified sources in Thailand. Thailand’s Commerce Ministry announced Wednesday that it would suspend the planned export of 1 million metric tons of rice to China, which was to pay for part of the cost of a new rail line under a deal reached when Premier Li Keqiang visited Thailand in October, the report said. The country’s anti-corruption commission is investigating whether corruption was a factor in the government’s purchase of rice from farmers, to whom Thai authorities owe about 100 billion Thai baht (US$3.06 billion), the report said.
