Guangzhou will set up detention centers for petty criminals but it will be nothing like the former labor camps that served as re-education facilities, the South China Morning Post reported Friday. The detention centers are intended to speed up trials involving minor offenses, Wan Yunfeng, presiding judge of the Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court, was quoted as saying. These include crimes punishable by less than three years in jail such as dangerous driving, theft, fraud, robbery, extortion, blackmail and troublemaking. Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province, will be the testing ground for the new system. China abolished labor camps last year, the report said.
