Rail freight rates seen hiked after Chinese New Year, paper says

The government is said to be planning to raise rail freight rates after the Chinese New Year holidays, Shanghai Securities News reported Friday. A 20 percent hike in the rates is possible, it cited sources at some listed firms as saying. At present, the average rail freight charge is 13 fen per metric ton per kilometer. That may be raised by 3 fen in two stages, it said. The final decision will be announced by the National Development and Reform Commission and China Railway Corp., it said.
