Telcos may allow users to trade unused data quota, paper says

China’s big three telecom carriers — China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK), China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (00728.HK) and China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd. (China Unicom) (00762.HK, 600050.CN) — may launch a service this year that allows users to trade their unused data usage quota, Shanghai Securities News reported Friday, citing unidentified sources. The move comes as competition is set to intensify in the market due to the entry of virtual telecom operators, it noted, At present, the big three carriers do not allow their subscribers to extend the validity period of unused data, meaning any unused quota will be erased. China mobile’s Hong Kong branch has launched a data trading service, and Shanghai is expected be the first city to do so in the mainland, the report said.
