China to step in to offset fall in hog prices, paper says

China will intervene in the market to curb a sharp fall in hog prices and prevent a mass exit of breeders from the industry, the China Securities Journal reported Monday, citing the National Development and Reform Commission. Live pig prices have been falling since the middle of December due to greater supply and weaker demand, sending some breeders into the red. Prices averaged 13.58 yuan (US$2.23) per kilogram as of Jan. 22, down 15.3 percent from Dec. 11, the paper said.
