Official urges more people to live in big cities, report says

A senior official of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is encouraging people to live in big metropolises where opportunities are greater, noting that market rules determine the size of a city, the official Xinhua news agency reported Sunday. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Li Tie {李鐵}, of the NDRC small-sized city reform division, said the government can only guide, instead of control, population issues in big cities. Li also said big cities acquire quality resources from neighboring areas, and should therefore shoulder more responsibilities in improving the lives of more people.
