China expects its shale gas output to surge significantly in the coming two years and possibly reach the target of 6.5 billion cubic meters by 2015, Shanghai Securities News reported Tuesday, citing sources from the Ministry of Land and Resources. The projection appears to be somewhat optimistic, given that the nation’s shale gas production last year amounted to just 200 million cubic meters. The National Energy Administration said in a recent circular that China could produce 1.5 billion cubic meters of shale gas in 2014. The figure would need to be quadrupled to reach the goal set for 2015, the report noted.
