Motor vehicles are one of the major sources of air pollution, including smog, and the government must act to prevent the contamination, National Business Daily reported Tuesday, citing a statement on the Ministry of Environmental Protection’s website. According to the ministry’s annual report, the number of vehicles on the mainland grew 0.01 percent in 2012 from a year earlier to more than 224 million units, emitting a combined 46 million metric tons of pollutants. More than 90 percent of the nitrogen oxides and small particles in the atmosphere were from vehicles, the report said. China has topped the world in vehicle production and sales for four straight years, the report said.
