Looming smog sparks call for fireworks ban, paper says

Forecasts for heavy smog for central and eastern China from Thursday have prompted weather authorities to call for a ban on fireworks over the Lunar New Year, China Daily reported Wednesday, citing a senior official. Fireworks will greatly contribute to air pollution, releasing “large amounts of toxic gas and particles such as sulfur dioxide, which will cause severe air pollution regionally”, China Meteorological Administration spokesman Chen Zhenlin was quoted as saying. Chen called on governments in central and eastern China to ban fireworks.
