The number of mainlanders making solo trips to Taiwan in December hit a monthly record of more than 62,000, the United Daily News reported Sunday, citing the island’s Mainland Affairs Council. December’s figure took the 2013 total to 520,002, or an average of 1,430 independent travelers per day, almost three times the 191,000 total, or daily average of 520, in 2012. About 744,000 mainland solo tourists have made the trip across the strait since the program began in June 2011, the report said. The program’s daily quota was raised in December to 3,000 from 2,000, the report said.
