Tourists to Tibet surge in 2013, Xinhua says

A record 12.91 million tourists visited Tibet in 2013, up 22 percent from the previous year, local tourism authorities said Sunday. The number of overseas tourists to the region grew 14.5 percent to more than 223,000, while tourism revenue surged 30.6 percent to 16.51 billion yuan (US$2.72 billion), Wang Songping, an official with the regional tourism bureau, was quoted as saying. Wang attributed the rise in tourist numbers to the nationwide promotional efforts, improved transportation access and the growth in individual trips, the report said.
