Electric buses are expected to replace traditional transport at a faster clip amid increased efforts by the central government to curb pollution, China Securities Journal reported Friday, citing local government authorities. Beijing plans to replace 500 buses with electric units between now and 2017 and invest more than 10 billion yuan (US$1.65 billion) to promote clean energy cars. The Shanghai municipal government will raise the percentage of buses using new energy above 50 percent, the report said. Global production of electric and hybrid vehicles is expected to grow 67 percent to 403,000 units this year from 44 percent, the report said, citing consulting firm IHS Automotive.
