An industry association has estimated that China’s catering sector grew by only 9 percent last year, the weakest level in 21 years, following the government’s frugality campaign, Xinhua news agency reported over the weekend. High-end dining businesses even reported a drop in revenue, rarely seen in recent years, the China Cuisine Association was quoted as saying in a report. According to the report, restaurants across the nation earned a total of 2.54 trillion yuan (US$420 billion) in 2013, with the upmarket catering sector suffering big losses. Under the circumstances, high-end restaurants are seeking a transition to please mass tastes by offering breakfast, promoting group meals and introducing fair-priced dishes, the report said.
