Changchun, Xi’an suffer natural gas shortage, paper says

Changchun in Jilin province and Xi’an in Shaanxi province are among the Chinese cities suffering from a shortfall in natural gas supply this winter, Economic Information Daily reported Monday. The problem has arisen as some small natural gas fields near these cities have been nearly depleted, and as cross-region supply has also been inadequate as government-backed business oligarchs strictly control the exploration, distribution and pricing of major natural gas resources, an unnamed expert was quoted as saying. The situation may become worse as China has stepped up replacing coal and oil with natural gas as the major energy resources amid choking smog in large parts of the country, the report added.
