UnionPay holiday transactions surge 23%, report says

China went on a holiday splurge during the Spring Festival, with UnionPay card transactions rising 23 percent year on year to nearly 200 billion yuan (US$32.8 billion) in the seven days to Feb. 6, Xinhua reported Saturday, citing the national bank card operator. Card payments in supermarkets were up 22 percent and shopping malls 27 percent, the report said. But transactions in restaurants were flat, partly as a result of anti-corruption and frugality campaigns that have restricted high-end consumption, the report said.
