Beijing may okay jail visits for rep office deal, paper says

Beijing is expected to agree to Taipei’s proposal to let officials from the planned cross-strait representative office visit Taiwanese in custody on the mainland, United Daily News reported Tuesday, citing unidentified sources. Humanitarian visits to detainees are the main obstacle to a deal on representative offices and Beijing could agree to them to ensure a memorandum of understanding is signed when Wang Yu-chi, the island’s minister of mainland affairs, heads across the strait for talks on Tuesday, the report said. The mainland might also agree to let students from Taiwan be covered by the national medical insurance program, the report said.
