China to expand public hospital reform nationwide, paper says

China will implement its public hospital reforms nationwide this year as part of the overhaul of the country’s healthcare system, the 21st Century Business Herald reported Tuesday, citing Yao Hongwen, spokesman of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. The commission has asked each province to pick at least one city to carry out the reforms, expanding the coverage from 17 cities under a pilot program, according to the newspaper. The reforms aim to overhaul the current system where public hospitals rely heavily on sales of drugs and fees from diagnostic tests to fund their operations, resulting in rising medicine bills and deteriorating services, the report said.
