Local govts ramp up green investment, paper says

Local governments are pouring large sums of money into environmental protection projects this year, Economic Information Daily reported Tuesday. Beijing is investing up to 760 billion yuan (US$125.4 billion) in the next four years to curb emission while Shanghai will spend 64.8 billion yuan, 3 percent of its 2013 gross domestic product, to support its own pollution control program, the report said. Analysts are calling for stricter oversight after an audit showed 102 of more than 5,000 environmental projects had illegally obtained 556 million yuan in funding using false information, the report said.
