Taiwanese smartphone maker High Technology Computer Corp. (HTC) expects to post a loss of US$100 million in the first quarter amid fierce competition, the National Business Daily reported Wednesday, citing the company. The company booked a net profit of US$10.23 million in the fourth quarter of 2013, against a net loss of US$101 million in the third quarter, the report said. Chairwoman Cher Wang has the company will focus on the middle and low-end market this year, and launch several smartphones priced at US$150-300 each. Facing tough competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics, as well as mainland rivals Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Xiaomi Inc., HTC saw its global market share fall to 2.2 percent in the third quarter of 2013, data from Gartner showed.
