Unmet reform hopes weigh on investor confidence, paper says

Chinese investors have turned pessimistic, with a key gauge of investor confidence dipping below the neutral 50 mark in January for the first time in nine months, the China Securities Journal reported Wednesday, citing China Securities Investor Protection Fund Corp. Ltd. The fund’s investor confidence index was 46.8 for January, reflecting official failure to satisfy investors’ expectations on market reform, the report said. Chinese investors’ confidence in the global economy and financial environment also dropped in January, with the related index falling to 36.3, down 8.9 points from a month earlier, the report said.
