China steps up fight against air pollution, Xinhua says

China has rolled out new measures to combat air pollution, the official Xinhua news agency reported Thursday, citing a statement released by the State Council after a meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang {李克強}. The government will control coal consumption and promote the use of new-energy cars and high-quality fuel for vehicles, and force polluting companies to cut emissions. At least 10 billion yuan (US$1.64 billion) has been allocated this year as rewards for local governments that make significant progress in air pollution control, the statement said.
