Taiwan to produce special-purpose mobile devices, paper says

A group of Taiwanese technology companies will invest in a government program to develop special-purpose mobile devices, Economic Daily News reported Thursday, citing the National Science Council. The devices will be tailor-made for specific services such as health care, security monitoring and energy saving, council chief Cyrus Chu was quoted as saying. The venture, which involves Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Mediatek Inc., is expected to receive up to NT$1 billion (US$33 million) in funding over the next two to three years, the report said.
