Hangzhou’s Qiandao Lake faces conservation dilemma, paper says

A number of development projects at Hangzhou’s Qiandao Lake (Thousand Island Lake), previously suspended to preserve the tourist spot’s fragile ecosystem, have reportedly resumed construction, prompting debates between conservationists and those pushing for faster economic growth in the capital of eastern China’s Zhejiang province, the National Business Daily reported Monday. Construction of the six projects, including a golf course by Wanxiang Group, was put on hold after a CCTV feature program stirred controversy over the subject. Sources said construction work has resumed recently as project proponents cited the potentially big returns, the report said.
