Mainland floats hopes for new cross-strait channel, Xinhua says

The mainland hopes it and Taiwan can make good use of a communication channel opened during a meeting between cross-strait affairs chiefs last week, Xinhua reported Monday, citing Fan Liqing, a spokeswoman from the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office. The mainland and Taiwan agreed to regular communication between their cross-Strait affairs departments during a meeting between office director Zhang Zhijun and Wang Yu-chi, Taiwan’s mainland affairs leader, the report said. Fan said the new arrangement will not replace talks between the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Straits Exchange Foundation, according to the report.
