TSMC expects record sales in 2Q, paper says

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) (2330.TW), the world’s biggest contract chipmaker, expects second-quarter sales to grow 15 to 20 percent from the three months to March and may hit a record high after customers, including Qualcomm Inc. and Broadcom Corp., increased their orders, the Economic Daily News reported Monday, citing an unnamed person with knowledge of the matter. The chipmaker won new contracts after companies transferred orders from their original contractor Global Foundry Co. Ltd., which failed to improve the defect-free rate of its wafers, the report said. TSMC voiced confidence that sales will rebound this year after bottoming out in the first quarter, which saw a drop of 5 to 7 percent from the previous three months.
