China’s big three telecom carriers — China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK), China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (00728.HK) and China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd. (China Unicom) (00762.HK, 600050.CN) — are expected to invest a combined 90 billion yuan (US$14.84 billion) in 4G network infrastructure this year, Economic Information Daily reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the matter. That compares with a 100 billion yuan estimate by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. China Mobile is expected match last year’s 41.7 billion yuan investment this year, with China Telecom pumping 45 billion yuan and China Unicom more than 10 billion yuan, the report said. At present, only China Mobile and China Telecom have commercial 4G operations. China Unicom is expected to launch 4G services in certain key cities next month, the report said.
