FTZ helps Shanghai’s trade expand 16.5%, paper says

Shanghai’s trade expanded 16.5 percent from a year earlier in January, better than the national average of 10.3 percent, mainly due to rising activities at the pilot free trade zone, the Shanghai Daily reported Wednesday, citing data from the local statistics bureau. Exports rose 9.8 percent to US$19.6 billion, compared with a 2.5 percent rise last December, while imports jumped 22.9 percent to US$22.8 billion, compared with December’s 13.8 percent, the report said. The city’s trade gained from the upturn in the global economy and the city’s free trade zone facilitated that process, an analyst was quoted as saying.
