A dozen licensed virtual mobile operators are gearing up aggressively to begin operations by June, the Economic Information Daily reported Thursday, citing unidentified sources. The operators are allowed to offer telecom services by leasing the networks of the nation’s three mobile telecommunications giants — China Mobile Ltd. (00941.HK), China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (00728.HK) and China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd. (China Unicom) (00762.HK, 600050.CN). They will offer customers phone numbers starting with 170 and are expected to have lower charges. Meanwhile, Zou Xueyong, secretary general of China Research Center for Virtual Network Operators, said the third batch of virtual operators will be announced in March, the report said.
