Delegate backs Guangzhou name change, SCMP says

A delegate to the People’s Political Consultative Conference in Guangzhou has suggested the city change its official English name back to Canton to raise its international profile, the South China Morning Post reported Friday, citing the Yancheng Evening News. Municipal delegate Lei Jianwei said the regional language was known as Cantonese in West and foreigners had referred to the city as Canton for 200 years. Lei also suggested Guangzhou authorities design a coat of arms or logo and have it printed on Mayor Chen Jianhua’s namecard, the report said.
