China’s southeastern Fujian province is seeking to set up a free trade zone that covers Fuzhou, Xiamen and Pingtan island, National Business Daily reported Friday, citing Zhang Canmin, deputy mayor of Xiamen. A new draft proposal for the Western Taiwan Straits Free-Trade Zone will be sent to the State Council for its approval once the plan is mapped out, a source was quoted as saying. The province’s original plan for the FTZ only covered Xiamen and Pingtan, with Fuzhou having tried to establish a trade zone on its own, the report said. The provincial government now feels it will be more beneficial to combine them, it said. A main feature of the FTZ will be strong linkages with Taiwan.
