Hospitals get fresh warning over ‘gratitude money’, report says

China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission sent out a notice Thursday warning hospitals not to allow their staff to accept “gratitude money”, the so-called red envelopes, from patients, news website china.com reported Friday. Hospitals are required to ask patients to sign agreements to abide by the rule, which will take effect nationwide from May 1, the report said. Some lawyers have suggested that any doctor who accepts money should be penalized, regardless of whether the patient has inked an agreement, the report said.
