Merchants face cost pressure as Tmall goes global, paper says

Alibaba has launched a new service to help domestic consumers buy products from overseas e-commerce sites, China Business News reported Friday. However, merchants on the new platform, Tmall Global, may face import taxes and other fees which could undermine their competitiveness. In 2013, the market for online purchases from foreign e-commerce sites was worth more than 70 billion yuan (US$11.49 billion), the report said.
