Shanxi may see sharp drop in coal output, paper says

Northern China’s Shanxi province, the country’s leading coal producer, may see its coal production capacity decline significantly because it has been slow in restructuring its coal mines and building new ones, the Economic Information Daily reported Monday. The industry revamp has been hindered by delays in the renewal of operating licenses and insufficient compensation to coal miners. Currently, the annual capacity approved by the province is 1.32 billion metric tons but this may fall to 1.1 billion metric tons by 2015 as nearly 100 coal mines are expected to be unable to operate by then, the report said.
