HTC seeks sales lift from new mid-market smartphone, WSJ says

Ailing smartphone maker HTC Corp. has unveiled a new midprice handset called the HTC Desire 816, aiming to boost sales volumes with a lower-priced offering, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. HTC is traditionally seen as a high-end phonemaker but is struggling to compete with low-cost handsets from a raft of Chinese phonemakers, the report said. HTC chief executive Peter Chou did not specify the new Android phone’s retail price but said “people are looking for affordable smartphones that don’t compromise.” The Desire 816 is set to start shipping next month, the report said.
