Huawei eyes 8-10% share in global smartphone market, paper says

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. had a 5 percent share of the global smartphone market last year and the company now aims to boost that figure to 8-10 percent this year, Economic Daily News reported Tuesday, citing Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device, the group’s mobile phone division. Speaking at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, Yu said his firm will launch low-end smartphones that cost less than 1,000 yuan (US$164), and that it will strengthen relationship with Taiwanese component suppliers. According to data from market research firm Gartner, Huawei shipped 46.6 million smartphones globally last year, next only to Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics, the report noted.
