Private power players may plug into retail market, paper says

Power supply reforms could get under way with an inflow of private capital into the retail market to generate multiple suppliers, the Shanghai Securities News reported Tuesday, citing Tseng Ming, from the National Development and Reform Commission’s power market reform team. The National Energy Administration has come up with an initial reform plan, which is expected to be published after next month’s National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference gatherings. The systematic overhaul will have two prongs — one to promote direct power purchases for users and the other to weaken the role of power-grid firms.
