Box-office sales to exceed 30 bln yuan in 2014, paper says

China’s movie box-office sales surpassed 3 billion yuan (US$489.56 million) in the first 25 days of February, a record high, with revenue for the whole year expected to break the 30 billion yuan mark, the Shanghai Securities News reported Wednesday. The domestic movie market has grown significantly over the past six years, from under 3 billion yuan in 2007 to 21.6 billion yuan last year, as cinemas mushroomed across the country. At end-2013, there were 3,831 cinemas with 18,398 screens across China, compared with only 6,000 screens in 2010, the report said, adding that their number has been growing at a rate of 30 percent annually.
