A resident of Shijiazhuang in China’s northern Hebei province has filed a lawsuit against the local government for its failure to curb air pollution, in what could be the first case of its kind in the country, Global Times reported on Wednesday. Li Guixin filed the case at the Yuhua District People’s Court against Shijiazhuang’s environmental protection bureau, requesting the bureau to fulfill its obligation to curb air pollution based on the law, according to the report. Li also asked for compensation of 10,000 yuan (US$1,630) from the bureau for economic and health damage caused by air pollution, it said. The court has said it will make a decision on hearing the case within seven days. Shijiazhuang, about 300 kilometers southwest of Beijing, is the capital of Hebei.
