Alibaba may add Japan message app to line-up, paper says

Alibaba Group, China’s largest e-commerce company, may soon acquire Japanese online messaging service provider Line Corp. as it seeks to cement its market position and compete with rival Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s popular WeChat application, Shanghai Daily reported Thursday. Alibaba declined to comment on the market rumor, but market watchers said Line could complement the company’s shortage in the online messaging sector and may allow it to catch up in the mobile internet sector.
