China plans to build giant lab to study smog, paper says

The China Academy of Sciences plans to build the world’s largest laboratory estimated to cost 500 million yuan (US$81.27 million) to study smog, but the proposal, submitted to the National Development and Reform Commission as early as 2010, has yet to be approved, Beijing News reported Sunday, citing He Hong, a researcher at the academy’s Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences. Some media reports earlier said the lab, to be built in Beijing’s Huairou district, has been approved. The lab is designed to conduct simulation tests on the formation of airborne particles, photochemical smog and dust haze, and will be open to international scientists, the report said.
