China to step up development of geothermal energy, paper says

China is expected to speed up the development of geothermal energy as part of efforts to cut coal consumption and fight pollution, the China Securities Journal reported Tuesday, citing Wu Xinxiong, director of the National Energy Administration. The government will offer tax breaks for the development of geothermal energy and subsidies to promote its use. The country targets a geothermal energy-fuelled heating area of 500 million square meters by 2015, which could save 20 million tons of coal equivalent, the report said.
