Japan urges talks with China to ease tensions, SCMP says

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Beijing and Tokyo should resume talks on a maritime defense communication mechanism and other issues to ease bilateral tensions, the South China Morning Post reported Tuesday. Kishida urged a candid exchange of views which could lead to high-level political talks between the two sides. Bilateral ties have been strained by disputes over the Diaoyu Islands, known in Japan as the Senkakus, and a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in December to the Yasukuni Shrine that honors the country’s war dead including 14 war criminals.
