Construction of Beijing’s second international airport is scheduled to start this year and to be completed in 2018 on a 200 square kilometer plot, the China Securities Journal reported Wednesday. The new terminal, with an estimated capacity to handle 130 million people a year, is set to leapfrog Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in the United States in terms of passenger traffic, according to the newspaper. It will be launched in three phases, with annual passenger traffic escalating from 40 million, to 80 million and 130 million. A third of the airport site is in Beijing, while the remainder lies in Hebei province, the report said.
