China will continue to support economic growth in Hong Kong and Macau in the next five-year plan, the official Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday, citing a senior official. The 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) will bolster Hong Kong’s status as an international center for finance, trade and shipping, Xu Shaoshi, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission, the country’s top economic planner, told a press conference on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress in Beijing. Macau will benefit from the development of Hengqin, an island off Guangdong separated from the gaming enclave by the Pearl River estuary, the report said. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project is moving smoothly toward a scheduled opening in 2016, Xu was quoted as saying.
