Agriculture Minister Han Changfu has sought to dispel fears over the safety of genetically modified food, saying he regularly eats it himself, the South China Morning Post reported Friday. “I eat food processed from GM crops, soya bean oil to be specific,” Han was quoted as saying at a press conference in Beijing, where the National People’s Congress is meeting. Most soybean oil products sold in mainland China were made from imported GM soybeans, Han said, noting that the country conducts rigorous assessment and supervision to ensure the safety of GM food. The minister also said the outbreak of bird flu should not deter people from eating chicken.
