The National Audit Office plans for the first time to look at local government land transfer accounts as well as take stock of farmland protection efforts this year, Economic Information Daily reported Monday, citing deputy NAO chief Dong Dasheng. The audit will begin in the first half with a test scheme comprising one eastern province and another in the west before going nationwide in the second half, Dong was quoted as saying. The results might be published in December or January. According to data from the Ministry of Land and Resources, land transfer fee income accounted for 86 percent of local governments’ fund-type revenue last year, compared with 16.6 percent in 2001, the report said.
