China steps up hunt for fugitives, paper says

Prosecutors will intensify efforts to round up corrupt officials and hunt those who have fled abroad, China Daily reported Wednesday. Preventing suspects from fleeing the country and tracing those who have escaped are important aspects of the fight against graft, Cao Jianming, procurator-general of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the country’s highest prosecution body, was quoted as saying. Authorities will also start procedures to confiscate illegal assets of fugitives abroad, Cao said. Prosecutors are focusing on duty-related crimes, which include offering and taking bribes and dereliction of duty, the report said.
